As a clinical psychotherapist and mental health professional (PACFA) I help you find the psychological source of the excess stress. Also, as a clinical naturopath (ANPA) I help make the physical changes you may need to make as well.
Stress will kill you. It increases the risk of heart attack, stroke, lowers your immune responses, damages organs and increases the risk of mental illness like depression, anxiety.
It also effects your relationships and is a major contributor to separation, divorce and mood disorders.
What is stress?
Stress is nature’s alarm signal. When you tread on a nail your body’s alarm system goes off and you withdraw your foot. When a situation becomes dangerously intense the alarm system goes off to warn you.
When the alarm signal goes off you are meant to immediately change what you are doing. Stop it or change your actions in some way.
If you don’t do that the alarm will still activate until you pay attention and the alarm is an emergency to which we are supposed to pay attention.
All the time we do not pay attention to the alarm, the other systems in our body suffer and you become sick because your energy is being directed largely to the alarm. You can’t ignore the alarm because the alarm is doing its job and it’s not going away until you pay attention to it and change.
Healthy natural stress
Stress is a natural healthy human response. We experience micro stress all the time. It’s the clear signal to change what we are doing.
Without micro stress we would continue to do unproductive, unhealthy or dangerous behaviours. So, in fact natural stress motivates us to change direction.
Unhealthy stress is when we are not paying attention to what is happening. You could be:
In a horrible job
Have a really nasty boss
In a relationship that’s toxic
Your teenage children giving you a tough time
Have money worries
Not getting on with your neighbors
When you are experiencing continuous unhealthy stress it’s time to act not just ignore the causes.
Why hypnosis helps?
When you are highly stressed you only pay attention to a small number of cues from the external world. You are focused on the source of the stress.
‘Hypnosis’ is the old Greek word for sleep. As a clinical hypnotist I help you calm your body and mind to go into a semi-sleep state. Slowing things down in your mind and body begins to give you a chance to reassess your situation calmly.
When you are calmer you get to see the bigger and see what is happening within the context of your whole life. You’re beginning to see the big picture again.
The effect of psychiatric medication
Stress is not an illness. It’s a behaviour that causes dysregulation of your body. Giving psychiatric medications for stress is reckless and bad medicine because they will have side effects and sometimes devastating.
Those side effects can be depression, anxiety, memory loss, alteration to the structure of the brain and even suicidal thoughts.
Whist it is true your body becomes physically unbalanced we need to rebalance your body mind and behaviours.
As an orthomolecular bio-functional naturopathic medicine practitioner I include all these approaches in your treatment.
The wholistic approach to stress relief
When you are stressed for a long period you become vitamin, mineral amino acid and nutritionally deficient. During the time of crisis your body consumes huge amounts of each.
Your blood pressure becomes elevated (hypertension), have a faster heartbeat (tachycardia), adrenal gland becomes overactive, thyroid gland overactive (hyperthyroidism) and eventually underactive (hypothyroidism), pituitary gland becomes over-stimulated (hyperpituitarism), gut becomes overwhelmed with bad bacteria (dysbiosis) and your brain becomes inflamed.
Therefore, my approach is to treat you physically as well as psychologically, behaviourally, changing your thoughts and emotions as well as treating you physically.
You are a whole person not just a diagnosis. I help you take care of all of you because that’s what you deserve. Isn’t it?
