I use clinical hypnotherapy (AHA) to you people overcome unhealthy relationship obsessions. You may also get health fund rebates.
As a clinical psychotherapist, mental health professional (PACFA), and clinical naturopath (ANPA) I look at any psychological and physical reasons for the obsession.
You are not the ‘behaviour’, but you have the behaviour. That obsession may be with your present partner, ex-partner of even someone you do not know.
In the extreme this can cause trouble with your family, friends and the law.
Putting off the decision to get help puts you in danger of being labelled as a stalker, and remember stalking is illegal. The longer you wait the more damage you will do to your reputation which will affect any future relationships.
Why am I obsessed?
There are many reasons why someone becomes obsessed with another person’s. They may be individual to you.
You may have attachment issues where you do not understand how to have healthy relationships with other people.
It could be that you may have been abandoned when younger so are overly desperate for attention.
Perhaps your self-esteem is so low that you feel that the other person can make you feel whole.
The obsessive behaviour may be part of a physical and mental illness.
Obsession damages people
When you exhibit obsessive behaviour towards another it damages them and damages yourself.
The other person becomes afraid, develops anxiety, depression and can lead to post traumatic-stress disorder. That damage can stay with them for life.
For you it damages your ability to perceive what is real and what is not real. You become psychopathic (deranged, aggressive, without conscience).
As fast as possible you need to stop that behaviour for the sake of all concerned.
Restoring independence
We all like and love people. That’s natural and healthy. Human beings thrive on healthy human interaction, like lovers, spouses, family and social groups.
To be healthy however, as a human-beings, we also need to be good at boundaries. That’s the respectfulness of other people’s spaces.
Everyone of us also needs to be whole in ourselves so we can enjoy our own company without encroaching on other people’s privacy and space.
Obsession, stalking and pestering other people who want to be left alone is a lack of respect of those boundaries.
A truly independent person only pursues others when they are invited.
Reading communication cues
Stalkers Stalking – let’s call it what it is failure to process other people communication cues. You may read those cues, but you are ignoring them.
Obsessing about people you are no longer involved with, have died or you are not involved with is delusional behaviour.
So you are not reading the normal real communication cues from other people. Instead, you are creating an alternative fantasy inside your mind.
Part of recovery has to be learning to read other people’s communications, respecting them and developing the appropriate responses.
Moving on forward
If you do now what you did then, which did not work, it will not work now.
In learning the consequences of our actions we must all alter our behaviours all the time. It’s our journey of mental evolution to evolve as people.
A clear sign of mental instability is the failure to adapt to new circumstances.
It’s normal and healthy to change all the time.
If you’ve been obsessing about someone else it’s time to move forward.
