So many people contact me asking if hypnosis can help with anxiety relief. I am always happy to tell them that indeed it can and very fast. There are of course many anxiety-based disorders, such as phobias, post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) which are special disorders for which hypnosis can also help; but most people need help to get over what we call general anxiety disorders (GAD) and stress.
During anxiety you may experience shortness of breath, sweating, dizziness, panic attacks, a feeling of paranoia, wanting to run away, the desire to hide, not feeling safe or as if someone or something is threatening you. It may come on suddenly or even gradually over a number of minutes or hours. There may be specific people, places or situations that trigger your experience of an out-of-control sense of anxiety. It may last for a short or very long period of time, going into days, weeks, months and in some cases even years.
First of all let me say that anxiety is a natural experience. If we did not have any anxiety in our life then we would just stand still and never move or do anything; we would be stuck in the status quo. The anxiety signal is the body telling you that it is time to leave the present experience and move forward to the next experience. So just to be clear, anxiety is the body’s signal to tell you to leave the present experience and move forward to the next experience.
Sometimes, however, we do not listen to that signal and move forward. When you are aware of the signal but take no action and try and stay in the present circumstances, the signal does its job of continuing to sound anxiety until you eventually move forward. You are biologically programmed to keep sounding the anxiety signal until you change – it is a genetically programmed self-preservation defence mechanism. The world is constantly changing and unless you change with it you will not survive. So here is the twist as you can now begin to see that anxiety is actually your friend.
How can hypnotherapy help?
Well the truth is that hypnotherapists do not want you to lose all your anxiety all the time because that would render you defenceless. What we help you do is put anxiety in context to your life and help you to be able to move on from a situation that triggers the out-of-control anxiety attacks.
Hypnotherapy can help you reduce the unnecessary levels of anxiety that you might have been experiencing that seem out of control. We also help you gain a sense of control instantly so that you can be calm and resourceful in the very situation that previously may have triggered the discomfort. Hypnotherapy is extremely effective and very fast in helping you resolve the situation. You learn to be far more relaxed when facing life’s events.
A well trained hypnotherapist will also, during hypnotherapy, teach you to be able to get control of your own experience whenever you need to in the future. This allows you personally to be able to feel more calm and relaxed in your everyday life.
