I am an eclectic therapist with my roots based in Ericksonian (Milton) hypnotherapy/psychotherapy. For me as a therapist, Ericksonianism is the most effective and certainly the most economical way for a client to find their way forward.
I’m simply not interested in seeing clients for a long time and chose my discipline because of the amazing help I knew that Ericksonian therapists could initiate in their clients.
Sometimes I use NLP techniques, along with brief effective therapy. My turnaround time is usually 1 to 6 sessions, a maximum of 12 sessions for deep-seated problems, but normally we work so fast and effectively that you are seldom in therapy for long.*
My philosophy is to assist you to become your own self-healer, helper and motivator.
I am simply a mind mechanic who can suggest which button, lever and switch might be used to effect the change required.
I am fascinated and devoted to human development through therapeutic approaches combined with hypnosis. I am the author of the books Investigating Stage Hypnosis and Self-Hypnosis for Life: Mind, Body & Spiritual Excellence.
One of my specific areas of expertise is helping people overcome alcohol and drug addiction.
I teach masterclasses to other hypnotherapists on how to treat clients with alcohol and substance problems and present at both the Australian Hypnotherapists Association and the Australian Society of Clinical Hypnotherapists. My latest book (2018) is Stop Drug & Alcohol Addiction: A Guide for Clinical Hypnotherapists.
I also specialise in sex, gender and sexuality.
I am the author of the books Trans-X-U-All: The Naked Difference (XPP, 1997), Sex, Gender & Sexuality: 21st Century Transformations (XPP, 1999) and Suicide in Intersex, Trans and Other Sex and/or Gender Diverse Groups: A Health Professional’s Guide (AHEC, 2021).
I am also co-editor of Finding the Real Me: True Tales of Sex and Gender Diversity (Jossey Bass/Wiley, 2003) and Trans People in Love (Routledge, 2008).
I have taught in this subject in the National Health Service in the UK, as well as teaching communications skills to sexual health workers. My special project has been the development of the Pan-identity Model of Sex, Gender and Sexuality, and my work has been reviewed in several international academic publications, including the European Journal of Clinical Hypnosis, The Psychotherapist, Journal of Sex Research and the American Journal of Psychiatry.
I also have a chapter in the book Women and Depression, titled ‘Overcoming Depression and Female Learned Helplessness through Hypnotherapy’ (Cambridge Scholars Publishing, 2010).
I regularly speak, lecture, teach and hold workshops on a wide variety of topics. I have spoken and lectured at conferences at Oxford University, Manchester University, the London School of Economics, University of Liverpool, University of Plymouth, University of Sussex, University of Southampton, University of Glasgow, University of Nottingham, University of Newcastle, University of Manchester Institute of Science and Technology, and Conway Hall in the UK, and at the University of Toulouse in France.
I came to Australia in 2001 and have spoken at a range of conferences, including the inaugural Women in Depression Conference in 2006 and the first Sex and Gender Diversity Human Rights & Dignity Conference in 2011.
I was the editorial director of Hypnosis Australia Online Journal between 2001 and 2009.
I am also a naturopath and medical herbalist who is trained in nutritional medicine.
